Exclusive Interview with Will Tang
How did you discover the bluesharp ?
~ I was browsing in a music store and it caught my eye, I thought that would be good to travel the world with!
If everything would be possible (waking the dead included) , which bluesharp player would you invite for a jam session?
~ Little walter of course! That would be one hell of a party :)
What is your favorite bluesharp brand / type and tell us why?
~ Special 20, the old version, just think it plays easily. Marine Band for tone.
What are the most important tips you can give to someone who wants to learn to play the bluesharp?
~ Listen and feel then make it your own. Learn the techniques but use it to say what you want to say.
Whisky wine beer or ...?
~ Guinness and single malt scotch whisky please.
How do you clean your harps?
~ Water rinse, but usually only when there's a problem.
What is the question interviewers never seem to ask you and...you wish they would? (Please provide your answer as well.)
~ Why is the blues important?
Because it is a folk music which has formed the roots of most modern music, it is improvised, is personal and should be played with feeling. You can play the blues in any genre!
Describe the ultimate recording studio (not the technique but the facilities)
~ It's not so much about the facilities, it's more about what you do with the facilities available, and even more importantly about how the musician performs. Don't fix it in pro-tools, record it right in the first place - think about what was achieved in the old days with 4 tracks or even 2 tracks!
Are you still nervous before going on stage and if so, do you use any "rituals" to calm you nerves.
~ A Guinness will do nicely.
What was the most memorable day in your musical career and tell us why.
~ The first time I ever sung in public was 'Stormy Monday Blues' at the Hong Kong Press Club, ...a long time ago :)
